Position Overview
The Residential Electrical Service Trainee (RCW) is an entry-level position designed for individuals looking to build a career in residential electrical service. The Trainee works alongside experienced Residential Service Electricians to develop hands-on electrical skills, learn proper troubleshooting and installation techniques, and understand Roman Home Services' standards for safety and customer service.
This position provides exposure to a variety of residential electrical systems and service calls. As skills and experience develop, the Trainee will be expected to take on increasing levels of responsibility while continuing to work within the requirements of their license, experience level, and applicable regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist experienced electricians with residential electrical service, repair, replacement, and installation work.
- Assist with the installation of wiring, receptacles, switches, lighting fixtures, electrical panels, breakers, and other residential electrical equipment.
- Learn proper methods for troubleshooting residential electrical problems and identifying potential causes of electrical failures.
- Perform basic electrical tasks under the direction and supervision of a qualified electrician.
- Assist with electrical panel upgrades, service changes, dedicated circuits, lighting installations, and other residential electrical projects.
- Learn to safely use hand tools, power tools, electrical testing equipment, ladders, and other equipment required for residential electrical work.
- Follow the National Electrical Code (NEC), applicable local codes, company procedures, and established safety requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while working in customers' homes.
- Protect customer property by using floor protection and following company cleanliness standards.
- Assist with loading, unloading, organizing, and maintaining tools, equipment, and materials.
- Learn appropriate residential service procedures, including evaluating customer concerns and communicating findings to the supervising electrician.
- Provide courteous and professional service when interacting with customers.
- Assist the electrician in explaining completed work and basic system information to customers when appropriate.
- Participate in company training, safety meetings, technical training, and other professional development opportunities.
- Maintain accurate paperwork, time records, job documentation, and other required information.
- Follow company policies regarding uniforms, appearance, vehicle use, tools, safety equipment, and customer service.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Valid Wisconsin Registered Electrician credential or ability to obtain the required credential prior to performing electrical work.
- Interest in developing a long-term career in the electrical trade.
- Previous electrical, construction, mechanical, or skilled-trades experience is helpful but not required.
- Basic understanding of hand tools and mechanical concepts preferred.
- Willingness and ability to learn residential electrical systems, troubleshooting, and electrical code requirements.
- Strong work ethic, dependability, and willingness to take direction.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Professional communication and customer service skills.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record as required by company policy.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including overtime when business needs require it.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to perform the physical requirements typically associated with residential electrical work, including:
- Regularly standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and climbing.
- Working from ladders and in attics, basements, crawlspaces, and other confined or restricted areas.
- Frequently lifting and carrying tools, materials, and equipment.
- Ability to lift and carry approximately 50 pounds independently, with heavier items handled using appropriate assistance or equipment.
- Working indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and environmental conditions.
Career Development
The Residential Electrical Service Trainee position is intended to provide a foundation for continued development within the electrical trade. Trainees will be offered classroom training (credits) through Milwaukee Electrical Training Institute (METI) for no charge. On the job experience and credit accumulation provide advancement. Trainees must demonstrate strong technical ability, customer service skills, reliability, safety awareness, and continued progress toward applicable licensing requirements may have opportunities to advance into higher-level Residential Electrical Technician positions.
Roman Home Services expects Trainees to actively participate in their development by learning from experienced electricians, completing required training, improving troubleshooting skills, and progressively taking greater ownership of residential electrical service work.
*Pay is based on hours of experience and union classification.
